How it works

A BlockBusters run, start to finish

BlockBusters is a Minecraft challenge for streams. You mine toward a goal and your chat keeps moving it. Here is a run from the first block to the last, with live numbers from two real channels.

The idea

A streamer breaks blocks toward a target. Viewers can make that target bigger by paying, and each payment also fires an effect in the world. The more chat pays, the more there is to mine and the more there is trying to stop you.

A classic run starts at 10,000 blocks. It ends when the streamer catches the goal, which can take days of play. The mod behind it is MineControl, and it runs in a single-player Minecraft Java world on the streamer's PC.

From first block to last

  1. Set the goal

The streamer opens the MineControl menu, picks BlockBusters and starts with a block goal. Landmark Desktop has already installed the mod.

  2. Mine

Every block the streamer breaks counts toward the goal. The counter shows on screen.

  3. Chat pays

One bit, Landmark Coin, Kick or cent adds one block. The streamer can set the value per block from 1 to 10 cents.

  4. Effects stack up

Each payment sets off an effect. Explode Next Block stacks, cows follow you, and bigger payments bring meteors, a tornado, a volcano or a nuke.

  5. Finish or reset

The run ends when the streamer catches the goal. If a reset is switched on, viewers can team up near the end to add a big chunk of blocks and send the counter back to zero.

Live numbers from real runs

These counters are read from the public run pages of Pikacools and LookAtAllThatJuice. Each page also lists the latest effects, top supporters, deaths and a spawn map.

The full effect list

Starting prices in coins, with one coin worth one cent. Each streamer sets their own prices, so a live page may differ.

How viewers pay

Bits on Twitch, where the channel can receive them, Kicks on Kick, gifted subs, Rumble Rants and YouTube Super Chats all work. Landmark Coins work on the streamer's Landmark page for any streamer. Subs add blocks only when the streamer turns that option on.

What stays in your hands

You can pause or turn off any effect, change any price and hide effects from the menu. Test fires from your dashboard never add blocks.
